Baby’s Room Neutral

Designing and decorating a baby’s nursery is one of the happiest events parents get to enjoy. Likely, your little one will look back on many photos of this special room as the baby develops into a toddler, school child, teenager, and eventually a grown-up. Choosing your baby’s room neutral colors make sense.

Today’s parents often question whether to paint the nursery a traditional “blue for boy, pink for girl.” What messages does this send to the child? What about parents who choose not to learn the sex of their baby until birth? How do the colors blue and pink affect the mood, sleep patterns, and development of children? Here’s an in-depth look at how colors affect babies, and how to choose what’s right for your tiny bundle.

Medical scientists still don’t fully understand all the factors involved in gender identity. Likely, it has less to do with the color of their nursery and more to do with genetics, their general upbringing, and perhaps factors we have yet to understand. A blue room won’t make boys rough and tumble, and pink won’t assure a princess.

Blue, however, is an excellent color for any baby’s nursery, because it is a calming color that actually decreases heart rate and blood pressure. Blue can calm fussy babies and help soothe them to sleep. Avoid dark blues, such as navy, as these colors tend to be intimidating. Pink is also calming in soft hues, ideal for babies’ rooms, but some girls raised in overly pink-and-frilly rooms actually rebel against it later, opting for tomboy status. Other girls embrace it and love their adorable rooms.

Many colors are unrelated to gender identities, and make ideal choices for babies’ rooms. Green, for example, is natural, relaxing, and is the preferred color for using in learning environments. Studies show it can also promote healthy eating habits. Like blue, green is calming if not too dark.

Red and orange are energetic colors, but can overstimulate children in excess. These make excellent accent colors for trim work or accessories. Yellow is bright and cheery, but in bright hues is hard on the eyes. Choose soft yellows or use brighter hues in accent pieces. Purple has the stable quality of blue, combined with the energy of red for an excellent balance. Beware of white rooms, as they are associated with withdrawn, shy children, and could be related to slow development issues. Use it as a trim color to balance the room.

Selecting the Right Hue of Your Chosen Color

The hue, as well as the color, affects the baby occupying the room (and the adults, too). Dark colors tend to be too melancholy, as does the color gray. Brighter colors are energetic, and can overstimulate babies. Lighter hues are ideal, allowing a relaxed atmosphere and stimulating development without over-exciting the child. Paint the walls in light colors and use the bolder, brighter hues as highlights to complement the colors in the room.

Remember while decorating that the baby will receive lots of gifts at the shower and from friends and relatives. Decorate the room in a way that these odds and ends work in nicely and don’t fight with your overall design. Allow some leeway to incorporate special teddy bears, hand-crocheted blankets, and other special items the child collects over time.
